The US Justice Department has filed terrorism charges against six senior Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, for their alleged roles in the October 7 attack on Israel. The charges carry severe penalties, including potential death sentences.
The United States Department of Justice has taken a significant step in its efforts to combat terrorism by charging six senior Hamas leaders with serious offenses related to the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. This development, announced on September 3, 2024, marks a crucial moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group.
Among those charged is Yahya Sinwar, the current leader of Hamas, who has been at the helm of the organization since 2017. Sinwar's leadership has been marked by a hardline stance against Israel and a focus on military buildup. The charges also include Ismail Haniyeh, the former political leader of Hamas, who was reportedly assassinated in July 2024.
The charges filed against these individuals are severe, encompassing seven counts that include conspiracy to murder US nationals and use of weapons of mass destruction resulting in death. Two of these charges carry the possibility of capital punishment, while others could result in life imprisonment or 20-year sentences.

The charges also shed light on Hamas's funding sources, revealing that the organization has received substantial financial support through cryptocurrency contributions from international supporters, including some within the United States. This highlights the evolving nature of terrorist financing in the digital age.
The October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 43 American citizens, according to the court document dated February 1, 2024. In response to this attack, Israel launched a military campaign against Hamas in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties on both sides.
FBI Director Christopher Wray underscored the bureau's commitment to investigating these attacks, stating that Hamas's actions have increased terrorism threats both within the US and against American interests globally.
