At RAF Cranwell, Prince William addressed new officers, stressing international relationships for defense. He reflected on uncertain times and the RAF's adaptability, drawing from his own military experience.

Prince William addressed 48 cadets at their passing out parade at RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire, emphasizing the critical role of international relationships in defense and security. The ceremony, which took place at the Royal Air Force's oldest military air academy, included officers from Jordan, Kenya, Pakistan, and Uganda.

The Prince, who earned his wings at RAF Cranwell in 2016, highlighted the importance of multinational cooperation in an era of global uncertainty. He stated, "Multinational relationships are key to international defence, security, and peace. The relationships you have formed through training will be crucial in achieving success in future roles and enhancing the security of all our nations."

William drew attention to the RAF's distinctive character and adaptability, qualities that have been evident throughout its history. Founded in 1918, the RAF is the world's oldest independent air force and has played pivotal roles in conflicts such as the Battle of Britain during World War II. The Prince emphasized the need for future officers to be prepared for evolving challenges, stating, "We live in a time of change and uncertainty, and you, as the future of the Royal Air Force, are the ones who will ensure that we are able to adapt and face future threats."

The ceremony included a Royal Salute and a flypast over the college, showcasing the RAF's proud traditions. William presented four awards and delivered a speech congratulating the graduates on completing their intensive 24-week training program. He quoted Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, encouraging the new officers to persevere in the face of challenges.

"Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't do this, or that. That's nonsense... Never, Never let them persuade you that things are too difficult, or impossible."

Prince William's advice to RAF graduates

The Prince's appearance at the ceremony also drew attention to his slightly fuller beard, marking one of his first public appearances with facial hair in military uniform. This comes after the RAF introduced a facial hair policy in 2019, following similar changes in other branches of the armed forces.

William's address at RAF Cranwell follows his recent comments on international conflicts. In February 2024, he called for an end to the fighting in Gaza, and in March 2023, he made an unannounced visit to a military base in Poland near the Ukraine border.

The RAF's commitment to international cooperation is reflected in its diverse operations, including humanitarian missions and joint exercises with allied nations. As the graduates embark on their careers, they join an organization with a rich history of adaptation and innovation, from introducing jet fighters into operational service to engaging in space operations since 2018.

Following the ceremony, Prince William interacted with the new officers, their families, and friends, learning about their training experiences and future aspirations. His presence at the event not only honored the graduates but also underscored the continued importance of the RAF in addressing global security challenges.
