Zelensky Urges Allies for Long-Range Missiles Amid Ongoing Conflict

In a significant development, Volodymyr Zelensky made his first in-person appearance at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where he addressed Western defense ministers during crucial NATO weapons discussions. The Ukrainian leader expressed concerns about the pace of long-range missile deliveries from Britain and other allies, highlighting a "shortage of missiles and cooperation" in fresh shipments of Storm Shadows and other ammunition.

Zelensky emphasized the need for extended-range capabilities to strike deep inside Russian territory, including occupied Crimea. He argued that such capabilities would motivate Russia to seek peace. The Ukrainian president's request comes as part of a broader strategy to turn the tide of Moscow's invasion in Kyiv's favor.

The Defense Contact Group, established in April 2022, brings together more than 50 of Kyiv's Western allies to discuss military aid. Zelensky's presence at this meeting signifies a shift in tactics as he seeks to end the conflict, which has now lasted 31 months.

Ukraine has reported territorial gains in Russia's southern Kursk region, claiming to have captured 1,000 sq km (386 square miles) a month after launching an offensive. However, Zelensky also warned of losing ground to Russian advances in the eastern Donetsk region, particularly around the city of Pokrovsk.

In response to recent Russian attacks, Ukraine's allies have pledged air defense support. John Healey, the UK defense secretary, announced a £162m package including 650 air-defense missiles. The US, represented by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, promised a $250m (£191m) aid package. Germany also committed to delivering four Iris-T air-defense batteries and ten Gepard anti-aircraft tanks.

"The quickest way to end this war is to provide weapons to Ukraine. Putin must realize that he cannot win on the battlefield, but must accept a just and lasting peace."

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General

The UK has also extended its Operation Interflex training program for Ukrainian recruits through next year. This initiative has trained over 45,000 Ukrainian troops since the beginning of Putin's invasion in February 2022.

As the conflict continues, Zelensky is expected to travel to Washington to present a "victory plan" to US President Joe Biden and other key political figures. The Ukrainian leader's efforts underscore the ongoing challenges and the critical role of international support in shaping the course of the war.
