US to Provide $125 Million Military Aid Package to Ukraine

The United States is set to provide a new military aid package worth $125 million to Ukraine, as Kyiv continues its operation in Russia's Kursk region. The announcement is expected to be made on August 23, 2024, one day before Ukraine's Independence Day.

According to unnamed officials, the aid package will include a variety of military equipment and munitions. Air defense missiles, HIMARS artillery systems, and Javelin anti-tank missiles are among the items to be supplied. The package will also feature anti-drone equipment, counter-electronic warfare systems, and artillery ammunition in 155mm and 105mm calibers.

This assistance comes as Ukraine's operation in the Kursk region, which began over two weeks ago, continues. Ukrainian forces have reportedly gained control of 93 settlements and advanced up to 35 kilometers into Russian territory. The United States was not informed about the plans for this incursion beforehand, with Volodymyr Zelensky citing concerns about Western allies' fears of Russian "red lines" as the reason for non-disclosure.

Despite some questions regarding the Kursk offensive, the US Department of Defense has stated that there are no plans to interrupt security assistance to Ukraine. Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secretary, confirmed this stance earlier this week.

On the eastern front, Russian forces have been making advances towards Pokrovsk, a critical Ukrainian stronghold and logistics hub. Reports indicate that Russian troops have captured at least three settlements in recent days. In response, President Zelensky has emphasized the need to bolster troop numbers and weaponry in the region.

"As president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies."
