Secret messages and deals: How Iran tries to end Middle East border conflict
Iranian top officials send private messages to stop fighting on Israel-Lebanon border. US diplomats rush to negotiate peace deal while military actions continue in southern regions
Iranian leadership makes quiet moves to stop border fights. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sent his trusted advisor Ali Larijani with special messages to Lebanese fighters last week-end: they should move their forces away from border areas (which matches old UN rules from that 2006 agreement)
The US is pushing hard to make peace happen — their special person Amos Hochstein will come to Lebanon on tuesday. Lebanese leaders seem open to talk: Najib Mikati and Nabih Berri got ok from fighters to speak for them; however theres some problems with getting everyone to agree
The peace plan has many parts to it: Israeli soldiers must leave Lebanon; fighters need to move north of Litani river (about 30km from border); Lebanese army should get stronger to control things better. But Yisrael Katz‚ Israels new defense-boss says “dont expect any pause in fighting“
Meanwhile real fighting continues - Israeli army went deep into Lebanon (about 5km) near Chamaa village. They also hit some places in Beirut where Mohammad Afif‚ who was media-chief for Lebanese fighters died with 5 other people. Some people think this might be connected to Donald Trump getting power in couple months
There will be no ceasefire and no pause in Lebanon
