Russian Forces Launch Counter-Offensive in Kursk Region

Russian forces have initiated a significant counter-offensive in the Kursk region, aiming to reclaim territories previously seized by Ukrainian troops. The operation, which began approximately on September 10, 2024, comes in response to a Ukrainian incursion that started on August 6, 2024.

According to Russian sources, including Maj Gen Apti Alaudinov, commander of Chechen special forces in Kursk, Moscow's troops have made substantial progress. Alaudinov stated, "A total of about 10 settlements in the Kursk region have been liberated." Pro-Kremlin channels report that Russian forces have advanced up to 150 square kilometers into Ukrainian-held areas.

Russian military bloggers claim that their forces have captured the village of Snagost, south of Korenevo. Footage shared on social media purportedly shows armored vehicles and tanks from Russia's 51st Guards Airborne Regiment advancing towards Snagost. Rob Lee, a senior fellow at a US think tank, noted that Russia appears to have successfully moved armored forces across the Seym River, despite Ukrainian attempts to hinder such movements by targeting bridges.

Ukraine had previously targeted bridges across the Seym River to impede Russian reinforcements. In response, Moscow constructed temporary pontoon bridges to maintain supply lines. The Deep State, a Ukrainian war blog with ties to the defense ministry, acknowledged a deteriorating situation on the left flank of Ukrainian forces in Kursk.

"Ukraine had sustained about 12,200 casualties in Kursk and lost nearly 100 tanks."

Russian Defense Ministry Statement

While Russian sources claim significant gains, Ukrainian officials have not publicly acknowledged the counter-offensive. Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces continue to make progress in other areas of the Kursk region, according to the US-based Institute for the Study of War. Geolocated footage reportedly shows Ukrainian advances near Komarovka and Vetreno.

The Kursk region, known for its rich history and strategic importance, has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict. Founded in 1032 as a fortress city of Kievan Rus', Kursk has witnessed numerous battles throughout history, including the famous Battle of Kursk in 1943, one of the largest tank battles ever fought.

As the situation continues to evolve, both sides present conflicting narratives, making it challenging to ascertain the exact state of affairs on the ground. The international community closely monitors developments in this crucial region, which is home to significant industrial and educational facilities, including the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant and Kursk State University.
