Putin's Popularity Dips as Ukraine Makes Inroads into Russian Territory

Recent developments in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine have led to a notable shift in public sentiment within Russia. According to a poll conducted by VTsIOM, a Kremlin-linked research unit, Vladimir Putin's popularity has experienced a significant decline following Ukraine's unexpected incursion into the Kursk region.

The survey reveals that Putin's approval rating dropped by 3.3 percentage points to 73.6% within two weeks of Ukraine's attack on August 6, 2022. This marks the most substantial decrease in support for the Russian president since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, surpassing the declines observed after the mobilization in Russia in September 2022 and the failed coup attempt by Kremlin-affiliated mercenaries in 2023.

FilterLabs, a US-based company, conducted an analysis of Russian mainstream and social media, indicating a growing frustration with the Russian government, particularly in the Kursk region. This sentiment reflects a rare instance of direct criticism towards Putin, as public discontent in Russia typically targets lower-ranking officials.

Peter Pomerantsev, an expert on Kremlin propaganda, noted that the invasion of Kursk has shaken Russians' confidence. He stated, "While state media in Russia is deflecting blame away from the 'dear leader' for Ukraine's success, on social media and inside Kursk sentiment towards Putin is dipping hard."

Ukraine's military progress in the Kursk region has been significant. Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces now control approximately 500 square miles of Russian territory and 93 settlements. Additionally, Ukraine has expanded its drone attacks across Russia, targeting both military and civilian infrastructure.

"Sooner or later, a Ukrainian response will reach any point in the Russian Federation that is a source of danger to the life of our state or our people."

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine

While Ukraine advances in Kursk, Russian forces are launching offensives in the eastern Donbas region. A Russian missile attack on Kostiantynivka, near Bakhmut, resulted in civilian casualties. Russian military bloggers report that Putin's armies are approaching Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub for the Ukrainian army.

The situation on the front lines remains dynamic, with both sides facing challenges. Ukrainian forces are reportedly experiencing ammunition shortages, prompting Zelensky to urge NATO allies for faster delivery of promised military aid.

As the conflict continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, recognizing the potential for further shifts in the balance of power and public opinion in the region.
