Pianist Jailed for Violent Attack on Partner After Rejected Advances

In a shocking case of domestic violence, Marlena Meczynska-Shiibashi, a 38-year-old pianist, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a vicious attack on her partner. The incident, which occurred in April 2023, involved the use of bleach and a knife, resulting in serious injuries to the victim.

The attack took place in Hastings, East Sussex, a town known for its historical significance rather than such disturbing events. According to court proceedings at Lewes Crown Court, the assault was triggered by the victim's refusal to engage in sexual activity with Meczynska-Shiibashi.

The victim, a 50-year-old man, provided a harrowing account of the attack. He described waking up to the sensation of liquid being poured on his face, which he quickly identified as bleach. The caustic substance, commonly used for cleaning and disinfecting, caused immediate distress as it entered his nose and ear.

"My next recollection was some liquid being poured over the left side of my face. When I inhaled I realised it was bleach. It went into my nose and ear."

The victim stated:

As the victim attempted to find his clothing in the darkness, Meczynska-Shiibashi stabbed him in the groin area, narrowly missing his genitals. The court heard that the attacker had intended to harm the victim's penis but missed due to his movement.

The pianist later admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana before the attack, which likely impaired her judgment. It's worth noting that marijuana use can significantly affect decision-making abilities and potentially exacerbate aggressive tendencies in some individuals.

During the trial, Meczynska-Shiibashi claimed she had been a victim of serious sexual abuse and acted in self-defense. However, the court found no evidence to support these allegations. Instead, Judge Christine Laing KC described the defendant as "a liar and a very manipulative person" who used false claims of abuse as an excuse for her actions.

The case highlights the serious nature of domestic violence and coercive control, which became a criminal offense in England and Wales in 2015. It also underscores the importance of addressing false allegations of abuse, which can have severe consequences in the legal system.

In addition to the prison sentence, Meczynska-Shiibashi received a four-year extended license to protect the public upon her release. The judge also imposed an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence in intimate relationships, regardless of gender. While statistics show that women are more likely to be victims of domestic abuse, this incident demonstrates that men can also be targets of such heinous acts.

As the legal proceedings conclude, the focus now turns to the recovery and well-being of the victim, who has undoubtedly experienced significant trauma from this ordeal.
