US-Iraqi Forces Eliminate 15 ISIS Operatives in Western Iraq Raid

A joint US-Iraqi operation in western Iraq resulted in the elimination of 15 ISIS members. Seven US troops were injured during the mission, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by the terrorist group in the region.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported a successful joint operation with Iraqi forces against Islamic State operatives in western Iraq. The mission, conducted on 2024-08-29, resulted in the neutralization of 15 ISIS members without any reported civilian casualties.

The operation targeted ISIS leadership, with CENTCOM stating that the eliminated operatives were heavily armed with various weapons, including grenades and explosive 'suicide' belts. Iraqi forces continue to investigate the raided locations for further intelligence.

During the mission, five US troops sustained injuries, while two others were hurt in falls. All seven personnel are reported to be in stable condition, with two evacuated for medical treatment.

CENTCOM emphasized the persistent threat posed by ISIS in the region, stating, "ISIS remains a threat to the region, our allies, as well as our homeland. US CENTCOM alongside our coalition and Iraqi partners, will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists."

This operation occurs amidst ongoing discussions between Baghdad and Washington regarding the presence of anti-jihadist coalition forces in Iraq. While Iraq has expressed a desire for a full withdrawal, no specific timeline has been established.

Currently, the United States maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria as part of the international coalition against ISIS. This coalition, formed in September 2014, has been crucial in combating the terrorist organization that once controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The recent operation highlights the continued threat posed by ISIS, despite its territorial defeat in March 2019. The group, known for its brutal tactics and extensive use of social media for propaganda, has adapted its strategies in response to military pressure.

Coalition forces have faced numerous attacks in both Iraq and Syria, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October 2023. The Islamic Resistance of Iraq, a loose alliance of Iran-backed groups, claimed responsibility for approximately 175 rocket and drone attacks against US troops in Iraq and Syria during the winter of 2023-2024.

In response to these threats, US forces have conducted retaliatory strikes against militant factions in both countries. Just a week prior to this operation, on 2024-08-22, US forces eliminated a senior leader of an Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group in Syria.

The ongoing military actions against ISIS and other extremist groups underscore the complex security situation in the region. As ISIS continues to pose a threat, international cooperation remains crucial in addressing the evolving challenges posed by terrorist organizations.

"ISIS remains a threat to the region, our allies, as well as our homeland. US CENTCOM alongside our coalition and Iraqi partners, will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists."
