Storm Bert heads towards Britain with snow-rain mix and powerful winds reaching 70mph. Weather experts warn about possible flooding travel issues and school shutdowns across multiple regions

Dan Holley from Met Office says Storm Bert will bring milder temps but serious weather issues. The storm (second named this season) brings heavy-snow warnings to northern parts and rain-wind alerts across UK regions

We expect 50-75mm of rainfall in warning areas‚ with over 100mm possible on high ground in Wales and south-west England

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley

Last week more than 100 schools in south-west England closed their doors due to unexpected snow-fall. Devon and Cornwallʼs police got lots of crash reports and told people to stay home unless its really needed

The weekend forecast shows:
* Snow reaching 10-20cm above 200m in north Scotland
* Up to 40cm possible on 400m-high areas
* Wind gusts hitting 70mph in some places
* Heavy rain affecting western regions

Earlier this week temps dropped way below normal – Warcop Cumbria hit minus-7.5C (usual November low is about 4C). The amber-alert for Saturday (7am-5pm) covers areas north of Scotlands central belt; experts say quick snow-melt mixed with rain could make things worse
