John Thompson, a decorated SAS hero who participated in the Iranian embassy siege and Falklands War, has passed away. His remarkable military career and post-retirement achievements left a lasting impact.

John Thompson, a distinguished veteran of the Special Air Service (SAS), has passed away at the age of 82. The former warrant officer, known for his involvement in high-profile military operations, died on September 1, 2024, after a period of ill health.

Thompson's remarkable career began in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), a corps responsible for maintaining and repairing the British Army's equipment. He later transitioned to the 16 Parachute Brigade before joining the elite SAS, a special forces unit founded in 1941 during World War II.

One of Thompson's most notable missions was his participation in Operation Nimrod, the SAS-led effort to end the Iranian embassy siege in London. The six-day crisis, which began on April 30, 1980, involved six armed men who took 26 people hostage. Thompson and his team employed their specialized skills, abseiling from the embassy's roof and deploying gas canisters to neutralize the threat.

The following year, Thompson joined Boat Troop G Squadron, a specialized SAS unit trained for maritime operations. His expertise was crucial during the Falklands War, a 10-week undeclared conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Thompson was deployed to the Falkland Islands, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, three weeks before the Argentine invasion on April 2, 1982. His role involved gathering vital intelligence and assisting in targeting enemy patrols throughout the conflict.

After retiring from military service, Thompson embarked on a new career as a bodyguard in the Middle East, utilizing his close protection skills to safeguard individuals from potential dangers. His retirement years were marked by continued physical challenges and personal achievements, including:

  • Trekking to Everest Base Camp, situated at an impressive altitude of 5,364 meters above sea level
  • Participating in marathons, showcasing his endurance
  • Earning a black belt in martial arts, demonstrating his dedication to self-discipline and combat skills

In his later years, Thompson resided in Anglesey, the largest Welsh island off the northwest coast of Wales. His passing was announced by Neil Houlihan, chief executive of Project Recce, a charity providing career advice to military veterans and their families.

"It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of John Thompson last night. John was an extraordinary individual whose impact on those around him will not be forgotten."

Neil Houlihan, chief executive of Project Recce, stated:

Thompson's life exemplifies the dedication and versatility of SAS operatives. From his early days in REME to his pivotal roles in high-stakes operations and his post-military pursuits, he leaves behind a legacy of service, bravery, and continuous self-improvement.
