In a groundbreaking operation, HMS Trent intercepted a narco-submarine, seizing £160 million worth of cocaine. This marks the Royal Navy's first such interception, bringing the ship's total drug seizures to nearly £750 million.

The Royal Navy has achieved a significant milestone in its counter-narcotics operations. For the first time, a Royal Navy vessel has successfully intercepted a narco-submarine, resulting in the seizure of cocaine valued at £160 million. This operation marks a crucial step in combating drug trafficking in the Caribbean region.

HMS Trent, an offshore patrol vessel, executed this unprecedented operation in collaboration with the US Coast Guard and a US maritime patrol aircraft. The interception took place approximately 190 nautical miles south of the Dominican Republic, where the semi-submerged vessel was detected and apprehended.

The operation led to the recovery of 2,000kg of cocaine, contributing to HMS Trent's impressive record of narcotics seizures. Over the past seven months, the ship has conducted eight operations, amassing a total value of nearly £750 million in confiscated drugs.

Commander Tim Langford, the ship's commanding officer, commented on the operation's significance:

"It has been a busy yet rewarding eight months for Trent whilst deployed to the Caribbean and this latest seizure reinforces the utility of the Royal Navy's offshore patrol vessels in the delivery of this vital tasking."

Commander Tim Langford stated:

The commander acknowledged the challenging conditions faced by his team during the interception of the semi-submersible, noting that such vessels are rarely encountered in Caribbean waters. He praised the collective effort of his crew, emphasizing that every member played a crucial role in the operation's success.

This latest drug bust, which occurred on August 26, 2024, came just 72 hours after HMS Trent's previous successful interdiction, where 462kg of cocaine worth £37 million was seized. The ship's remarkable performance has surpassed HMS Argyll as the most effective anti-smuggling vessel in the Royal Navy this century, exceeding the frigate's previous record of £620 million in seized narcotics.

The Royal Navy's efforts in disrupting transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) underscore its vital role in maintaining maritime security and upholding international law. These operations are particularly crucial given the increasing flow of drugs to Europe and the UK, where an estimated 117 tonnes of cocaine are consumed annually.

Following its counter-narcotics missions, HMS Trent will transition to supporting British Overseas Territories during the hurricane season. The ship carries approximately 50 specialists in disaster relief operations, including the Crisis Response Troop from 24 Commando Royal Engineers. Equipped with tools for infrastructure repairs and life-saving medical supplies, HMS Trent also utilizes a drone system called Puma, operated by 700X Naval Air Squadron, for reconnaissance and surveillance.

The ship's versatility was recently demonstrated when it visited the British Virgin Islands, assisting with repairs on Tortola in the aftermath of tropical storm Ernesto. This multi-faceted approach highlights the Royal Navy's commitment to both law enforcement and humanitarian assistance in the Caribbean region.
