Probe Launched into Fatal Sinking of Tech Tycoon's Superyacht off Sicily

Prosecutors investigate the rapid sinking of Mike Lynch's yacht off Sicily's coast, resulting in six deaths. Questions arise about crew actions and passenger warnings during the incident.

In a tragic maritime incident, prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the sinking of Mike Lynch's superyacht off the Sicilian coast, which resulted in the loss of six lives, including the British tech entrepreneur and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. The incident, which occurred five days ago, has raised significant questions about the crew's actions and the vessel's rapid submersion.

The 184-foot Bayesian, constructed by Italian manufacturer Perini Navi 16 years ago, encountered a violent storm while anchored near Porticello on Sicily's northern shore. Investigators are scrutinizing whether the crew adequately warned sleeping passengers of the impending danger. The yacht's Automatic Identification System (AIS) data reportedly showed a mere 16-minute interval between the storm's impact and the vessel's sinking.

Raffaele Cammarano, one of the lead prosecutors, stated, "We're trying to ascertain from survivors' statements if Lynch and his guests were warned of the approaching storm." This inquiry is part of a broader investigation into potential multiple manslaughter and shipwreck causation through negligence.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that it would be even more serious if the investigation revealed "behaviors that were not aligned to the responsibilities that everyone needs to take in shipping." Maritime law mandates that captains ensure the safety of all on board, a principle now under scrutiny in this case.

The yacht's New Zealander skipper, James Cutfield, described by his brother as "a very good sailor" who was "very well respected" in the Mediterranean, has been questioned along with other survivors. New Zealand's strong maritime culture is known for producing skilled sailors, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.

Marine experts express puzzlement over the Bayesian's rapid sinking, especially given that a nearby large yacht weathered the storm unscathed and assisted in rescue efforts. This disparity has prompted a closer examination of the vessel's construction and safety systems, typical features of luxury superyachts.

As part of the investigation, authorities plan to recover the yacht from its resting place 165 feet below the surface, about half a mile offshore. This depth, while challenging, is considered relatively shallow for professional diving operations, potentially facilitating the recovery process.

In a poignant tribute, Sasha Murray, the Bayesian's chief stewardess, remembered Hannah Lynch's deep connection to her parents, recalling the young woman's oft-expressed determination to save them if anything were to happen.

This tragic event underscores the unpredictable nature of Mediterranean weather and the critical importance of maritime safety protocols, even for vessels as luxurious and seemingly secure as modern superyachts.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them."

As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a somber reminder of the sea's power and the weighty responsibilities borne by those who sail upon it, regardless of their vessel's size or sophistication.
