Dulwich College Headmaster Resigns After Staff Party Incident

Joseph Spence, headmaster of the prestigious Dulwich College in south London, has announced his resignation following an incident at a staff summer party. The event, which occurred on July 4, 2024, led to an independent investigation and subsequent action by the school's governors.

In a letter to parents and staff, Spence admitted to losing his temper with a colleague, describing it as an unprecedented occurrence in his career. He expressed remorse for his actions, stating:

"I have apologised to the individual concerned. I repeat my apology to you."

The incident prompted Spence to reflect on the challenges of leading a complex multinational institution like Dulwich College, particularly in light of recent global difficulties. As a result, he decided to step down from his position in September 2024, a year earlier than his originally planned retirement in August 2025.

Adrian Carr, the chairman of governors, confirmed that an independent investigator was appointed to conduct a thorough examination of the incident. He assured that appropriate measures had been taken to address the situation.

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Spence's tenure at Dulwich College has been marked by significant achievements. He joined the institution in 2009 and has since been instrumental in developing its social mission and scholarship programs. In recognition of his contributions, Spence will transition to an ambassadorial and advisory role, focusing on fundraising for bursaries.

Dulwich College, founded in 1619 by Elizabethan actor Edward Alleyn, has a rich history and prestigious reputation. The school's main building, designed by Charles Barry Jr. and opened in 1870, stands as a testament to its longstanding tradition of excellence. With a motto of "Detur Gloria Soli Deo" (Let glory be given to God alone), the college has consistently ranked among the top schools in the UK.

The institution boasts a diverse curriculum, including a strong emphasis on modern languages and STEM subjects. Its James Caird Library, named after Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition lifeboat, houses an impressive collection of resources. Additionally, Dulwich College is renowned for its significant art collection, featuring works by masters such as Rembrandt and Gainsborough.

Dulwich College has produced numerous notable alumni, including Oscar-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley, and Roxy Music musician Phil Manzanera. The school's influence extends beyond the UK, with a network of international schools, primarily in Asia, operated by Education in Motion.

As Dulwich College prepares for this transition, Robert Milne, currently headmaster of Emanuel School, has been appointed as Spence's successor. Milne is set to assume his new role in September 2025, with an interim headmaster overseeing the school until then.

The college, which generated £36 million in net school fees last year, continues to uphold its tradition of academic excellence while adapting to the challenges of modern education. As it moves forward, Dulwich College remains committed to its core values and the pursuit of knowledge that has defined its legacy for over four centuries.
