MP raises concerns over police questioning of well-known journalist at home

Police officers showed up at Telegraph writers house to discuss social-media post but refused to give details. Labour MP brought this up during PMQs raising questions about police priorities

On remembrance sun‚ police-officers made an unexpected visit to Allison Pearsonʼs home to question The Telegraph writer about her social-media activity but didnt provide specifics about the investigated post or complainant

During todays Prime Ministers Questions Graham Stringer the MP for Blackley and Middleton South brought up this incident – comparing it to tactics used by east-german secret police. He questioned whether law enforcement should focus on:

  • shoplifting
  • burglaries
  • other street-level crimes

Instead of what he called intimidating media professionals

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner responded to the matter; acknowledging the importance of press freedom while maintaining distance from the specific case. “Free speech and our press is part of our democracy“ she stated before adding a note about responsibility that comes with such freedoms

She pointed out that since this was an active investigation (and because police operate independently) it wouldnʼt be right for her to make specific comments about the case at hand
