UK launches new AI lab to counter growing Russian cyber-threats
British government starts new AI security research facility with £8.22M funding to fight cyber-threats. The lab aims to unite top experts from industry academia and government to boost UKʼs digital defence capabilities
The UK govt kicks-off a high-tech defence project as Pat McFadden prepares to speak at todays Nato Cyber Defence meet-up in London: the country needs strong AI tools to protect its digital borders
The new Laboratory for AI Security Research gets £8.22M start-up money and brings together key partners:
- The Foreign Office
- GCHQ
- National Cyber Security Centre
- Defence Science Lab
- Top universities
- AI Safety Institute
Vladimir Putin made threats about hitting UK targets (after British-made missiles reached Russia last week) - which shows why this lab is needed right now. The Russian leader tested new mid-range weapons and talked about using them against countries that help Ukraine
AI is already revolutionising many parts of life including national security; but as we develop this technology theres a danger it could be weaponised against us
The new lab aims to work with Five Eyes partners and nato allies - its gonna help protect power-grids and other key systems from cyber-attacks. McFadden points out that cyber-war isnt something in the future; its happening now and UKʼs defences are tested daily
In a direct message to Moscow McFadden will say that Britain sees what Russia does and fights back both in public and behind-the-scenes. He thinks Putin wants chaos not peace - but UK wont back down from supporting Ukraine
