Tito Jackson, Guitarist of The Jackson 5, Dies at 70

Tito Jackson, guitarist and vocalist of the renowned 1970s pop group The Jackson 5, has passed away at the age of 70. His sons, TJ, Taj, and Taryll, shared the news via social media on September 16, 2024, expressing their shock and sadness at the loss of their father, whom they described as an "incredible man" with a deep concern for others' well-being.

Born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October 15, 1953, Tito was the third of nine Jackson siblings. The Jackson 5, formed in 1964 in Gary, Indiana, consisted of brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael. The group achieved significant success in the 1970s, with their first four singles reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their popularity led to the family starring in their own variety show, "The Jacksons," which aired from 1976 to 1977.

While Tito was known for his guitar skills within the group, he often took a background role compared to his more prominent siblings. The Jackson 5's impact on the music industry was recognized with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, acknowledging their contribution to popular music and their impressive sales of over 100 million records worldwide.

The Jackson family faced a significant loss with the passing of Michael Jackson on June 25, 2009. In a December 2009 interview, Tito reflected on how this tragedy brought the family closer together, stating, "There's still moments when I just can't believe it. So I think that's never going to go away."

Despite the family's continued performances, Tito acknowledged the lasting impact of Michael's absence. In 2014, he noted, "I don't think we will ever get used to performing without him. He's dearly missed," adding that they felt Michael's spirit with them during shows.

Tito pursued a solo career later in life, releasing his debut album "Tito Time" in 2016, followed by the single "One Way Street" in 2017. He continued to create music, releasing a blues album titled "Under Your Spell" in 2021. His musical endeavors extended beyond recording, as he appeared as a judge on the UK singing competition "Just the Two of Us" in 2007 and performed at the Glastonbury Festival in 2022.

Throughout his career, Tito balanced his musical pursuits with family responsibilities. He was married to Delores "Dee Dee" Martes from 1972 to 1993 and prioritized raising his three sons, who later formed their own music group, 3T. Tito was also a grandfather to seven children.

Beyond his musical legacy, Tito was recognized for his contributions to the industry, receiving a BMI Icon Award in 2017. He was also known for his charitable work, supporting various causes including the Heal the World Foundation.

Tito's last public communication came just days before his passing. On September 11, 2024, he shared a message on social media about visiting a memorial dedicated to Michael Jackson in Munich, Germany, expressing gratitude for the place that honored his brother's memory and their shared legacy.

The loss of Tito Jackson marks the end of an era for the Jackson family and the music industry, leaving behind a legacy of musical innovation, family dedication, and philanthropic efforts.
