Ben Thapa, a talented tenor known for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, has passed away at the age of 42 due to kidney failure. Thapa gained prominence as a member of the vocal group G4, which achieved success after participating in the inaugural season of The X Factor in 2004.

Born on March 2, 1982, in Cambridge, Thapa's journey in music was marked by perseverance and passion. Despite facing challenges in his early life, including being in foster care and experiencing bullying, he pursued his love for music with unwavering determination.

Thapa's musical education took him to prestigious institutions, including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music. His talent was recognized early on, and he became a Britten Pears Young Artist, a program known for nurturing exceptional musical talent.

G4, formed with fellow music students Jonathan Ansell, Mike Christie, and Tom Lowe, began their journey busking in Covent Garden. Their unique blend of classical and popular music, performing pieces like Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," caught the attention of passersby and eventually led them to audition for The X Factor.

Despite initial skepticism from judge Simon Cowell, G4 secured second place in the competition, launching their career in the music industry. The group's success included a £1.5 million record deal, multiple albums, and sold-out tours. However, the pressures of fame took their toll, leading to the group's dissolution in April 2007.

Following G4's breakup, Thapa focused on his opera career, showcasing his versatility and skill in various productions. He delivered notable performances in Longborough Festival Opera's "Tristan und Isolde" and Birmingham's production of Stockhausen's "Mittwoch aus Licht." His portrayal of Salieri in Errolyn Wallen's "The Paradis Files" was particularly praised, demonstrating his ability to bring complex characters to life through music.

Thapa's musical endeavors extended beyond the opera stage. He served as a lay clerk at St George's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Southwark and performed in oratorios, showcasing his diverse musical talents.

G4 briefly reunited in 2009 for a performance at Ansell's wedding, followed by a reunion tour in 2015. Thapa remained with the group until 2018, balancing his commitments with his solo career.

In his final days, Thapa shared his health journey with his followers, approaching his medical treatment with characteristic humor and grace. His passing on September 8, 2024, marks the end of a remarkable musical career that touched many lives through the power of his voice and performances.
