Strictly Judge Urges Resilience Amid Show's Biggest Crisis

Craig Revel Horwood, the longest-serving judge on Strictly Come Dancing, has addressed the recent controversies surrounding the show, emphasizing the importance of constructive criticism in maintaining its standards. As the popular dance competition prepares for its new series next month, Revel Horwood's comments come amidst what some are calling the biggest crisis in the show's 20-year history.

The judge, who has been with the program since its inception in 2004, stated, "I hope the standards don't drop this year." He stressed that celebrities participating in the show "should be able to take criticism," warning that without it, the series risks becoming "watered down and vanilla, where no one's trying."

Revel Horwood's remarks follow recent allegations of mistreatment by professional dancers towards contestants. Amanda Abbington, who withdrew from last year's series, has accused Giovanni Pernice of "threatening and abusive behavior," claiming she suffered mild post-traumatic stress disorder from their interactions. Pernice denies any wrongdoing, and an investigation is ongoing.

In a separate incident, the BBC dismissed Graziano Di Prima in June after allegations of physical misconduct towards contestant Zara McDermott during rehearsals. Di Prima has expressed deep regret over the events leading to his departure.

Addressing these issues, Revel Horwood supported the introduction of chaperones in rehearsal rooms, stating, "Everyone must be protected, including the teachers." He noted that in the broader theatre world, celebrities can sometimes become demanding, highlighting the need for mutual respect and understanding between professionals and contestants.

"As far as saying, 'Oh, that was really bad, you need to try it again', I'm not gonna cry over that. You just have to be able to take some criticism. Otherwise, we're living in a world where no one is criticised, and it will become watered down and vanilla, where no one's trying."

The judge's comments reflect the show's commitment to maintaining high standards while ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all participants. Strictly Come Dancing has been a cultural phenomenon since its launch, with the format exported to over 40 countries worldwide and setting a Guinness World Record for the largest dance lesson in 2012.

As the new series approaches, featuring celebrities such as Toyah Willcox, Jamie Borthwick, and Olympic swimmer Tom Dean, the show aims to balance its trademark entertainment value with increased awareness of participant well-being. The introduction of same-sex dance partnerships in 2020 demonstrates the program's ability to evolve while maintaining its core appeal.

Strictly Come Dancing continues to be a beloved fixture in British television, having raised millions for Children in Need through its annual special and consistently attracting high viewing figures. As it navigates these recent challenges, the show's enduring popularity and ability to adapt suggest it will remain a staple of Saturday night entertainment for years to come.
