Robert Sidaway, a versatile British actor who later became a successful producer and writer, has passed away at the age of 82. While never achieving widespread fame, Sidaway's career spanned several decades and encompassed various aspects of the entertainment industry.

Sidaway's acting career began in 1958 at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton. After training at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) from 1960 to 1962, he embarked on a journey that would see him appear in numerous popular British television programs.

One of Sidaway's most notable achievements was his involvement in the early years of Doctor Who, a science fiction series that first aired in 1963. He had the distinction of appearing alongside the first two actors to portray the titular character, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. In 1966, Sidaway played Avon in "The Savages," and two years later, he took on the role of Captain Jimmy Turner in "The Invasion," a story that introduced UNIT, a fictional military organization that would become a recurring element in the series.

The actor-turned-writer's creative journey continued with the production and co-writing of "The Optimist" (1983-85), an innovative Channel 4 series featuring wordless comedies. This project showcased Sidaway's ability to think outside the box and create unique content.

Sidaway's producing career reached new heights with two successful compilation series. "Best of British" (1987-94) for the BBC explored five decades of British cinema, while "The World of Hammer" (1994) for Channel 4 delved into the archives of the iconic Hammer Film Productions.

"Working with my father on these compilation series was an incredible experience. His knowledge of film history and his creative vision were truly inspiring."
