Paint attack reveals deep split in Georgian politics after disputed election
Black paint thrown at Georgiaʼs election chief during heated parliament session shows growing political divide. Opposition protests election results while ruling party shifts towards Moscow-friendly policies
In a heated parliament meeting Davit Kirtadze from Unity National Movement splashed black paint on election commission head Giorgi Kalandarishvili (who he called a “black spot“ on democracy) making the countries political crisis worse
The paint-throwing incident happened during talks about election results from Oct 26th: where ruling party Georgian Dream got 54% of votes but opposition says they cheated by putting black dots on ballots. The court in Tbilisi threw out 11 cases against the vote saying they dont have proof; oppositions not happy about this
Georgian Dreams been running things since bout 12 years ago — they used to like EU stuff but now theyre doing things different. They made this foreign-agents law (which looks alot like what Russia does) and got friendly with Viktor Orban and other anti-EU folks. President Salome Zurabishvili says Moscow messed with the vote but Russia says thats not true
The EU and US want someone to check out the weird stuff that happened in voting but didnt say its completely wrong. Lots of people-thousands actually are super mad: theyʼve been doing these big walk-protests in Tbilisi streets (the capital city). Opposition folks say they wont go to parliament meetings — thats how mad they are. EU folks stopped talking bout letting Georgia join cause theyre worried about how things are going there
