Met Police Probe Potential Accomplices in Mohamed Fayed Allegations

The Metropolitan Police have initiated an investigation into potential criminal offenses related to allegations against Mohamed Fayed, the former owner of Harrods who passed away in 2023 at the age of 94. This inquiry comes in response to accusations from five women who claim they were raped by Fayed, with additional allegations of sexual misconduct from others.

Law enforcement officials are urging any individuals who may have been victimized but have not yet come forward to contact them. The police have emphasized that while criminal proceedings cannot be brought against Fayed posthumously, they are committed to exploring whether any other individuals could be implicated in criminal offenses.

Mohamed Fayed, an Egyptian-born businessman, was a controversial figure in British society. He acquired Harrods in 1985 and owned it until 2010 when he sold it to Qatar Holdings for £1.5 billion. Fayed's life was marked by both success and controversy, including his ownership of Fulham Football Club from 1997 to 2013 and his involvement in the "cash-for-questions" scandal of the 1990s.

The businessman's personal life was also subject to public scrutiny, particularly after the tragic death of his son Dodi Fayed in a car crash with Princess Diana in 1997. This event led Fayed to make controversial claims about the British Royal Family and commission the "Innocent Victims" statue at Harrods.

Despite his prominent status, Fayed was denied British citizenship multiple times. He started his business career in Saudi Arabia and later expanded his empire to include the Ritz Hotel in Paris, which he purchased in 1979. Fayed was known for his extravagant lifestyle and public feuds, including a legal dispute with Tiny Rowland over Harrods ownership.

The Metropolitan Police stated:

"It is important to make clear at this stage that it is not possible for criminal proceedings to be brought against someone who has died. However, we must ensure we fully explore whether any other individuals could be pursued for any criminal offences."

This investigation highlights the complexities of pursuing justice in cases involving deceased individuals accused of serious crimes. The police are conducting thorough reviews of all existing allegations reported about Fayed to identify any new lines of inquiry based on recently emerged information.

Fayed's legacy is a complex one, encompassing his business acumen, philanthropic efforts through the Al Fayed Charitable Foundation established in 1987, and his controversial public persona. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 1997 and maintained high-profile friendships, including with Michael Jackson.
