Massive Attack's Groundbreaking Eco-Concert Set to Redefine Green Events

Massive Attack, the pioneering trip hop band from Bristol, is set to host a groundbreaking eco-friendly concert this Sunday, August 25, 2024. The event, taking place in the band's hometown, aims to set a new standard for sustainable live music performances.

The concert, which will host 34,000 fans, is implementing several innovative measures to minimize its environmental impact:

  • Sustainable transportation:

    • Electric shuttle buses provided
    • Encouragement to walk, cycle, or use public transport
    • Special trains arranged for post-show travel
    • Priority tickets for local residents to reduce travel emissions
  • Energy efficiency:

    • Site powered by large batteries instead of diesel generators
    • Collaboration with Ecotricity, a green energy company
  • Waste reduction:

    • Vegan-only food options
    • Reusable cups for drinks
    • Fans encouraged to bring empty water bottles
  • Prohibited items:

    • Disposable vapes
    • Loose glitter

These measures align with Massive Attack's long-standing commitment to environmental causes. In 2019, the band toured Europe by train to reduce their carbon footprint. They also commissioned a study from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, which revealed that live concerts and performances generate 405,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually – equivalent to about 200,000 cars.

"It is a first. An event this size, with this many people, being entirely powered by batteries, without a drop of diesel."

Dale Vince, CEO of Ecotricity, stated:

The initiative by Massive Attack is part of a growing trend in the music industry to address environmental concerns. Coldplay, for instance, recently reported a 59% reduction in carbon emissions during their world tour compared to previous events. They implemented measures such as energy-efficient lighting and sets built with sustainable materials like bamboo.

Similarly, in 2022, pop star Billie Eilish held a climate-focused tour, during which London's O2 arena served an entirely vegan menu for her concerts.

As pioneers of the trip hop genre, Massive Attack has consistently pushed boundaries in both music and social causes. Formed in Bristol in 1988, the band has released five studio albums and collaborated with numerous artists. Their innovative approach to music production and performance has earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

This eco-concert not only showcases Massive Attack's commitment to sustainability but also serves as a blueprint for future events in the music industry. By demonstrating that large-scale performances can be both entertaining and environmentally responsible, the band is paving the way for a greener future in live music.
