EU offers energy deal to Trump while preparing for possible trade shake-up
European Union suggests boosting American gas purchases to avoid new import fees from Trump. Leaders discuss ways to handle future trade relations while keeping strong ties with US
In a strategic move at the Budapest summit Ursula von der Leyen proposed increasing American liquefied gas purchases to prevent possible U.S import fees. The EU Commission chief pointed out that switching from Russian to U.S energy would benefit both sides: its cheaper and helps fix trade imbalances
The timing is crucial as EU plans to stop Russian LNG shipments by early-25. Recent data shows that U.S already provides nearly half of EUʼs gas needs while Russian supplies (which still make up about 17%) are going mostly to just three countries

Viktor Orban Hungarys leader described the upcoming talks as challenging because Trump (whos known for his deal-making skills) will be a tough negotiator. Meanwhile Giorgia Meloni Italys prime-minister might step in as a go-between thanks to her connections with tech mogul Elon Musk
The EU is also looking at wider trade issues. Belgian leader Alexander De Croo suggested that Europe and America could work together on China-related challenges: “Weʼre actually allies and it would be a bit silly if allies would impose tariffs on each other“
