British Army tests new super-gun system just miles from Russian territory
British military conducted first-ever test of its new long-range artillery near Russian border. The exercise brings together troops from 28 countries in Finlandʼs largest training ground
In a ground-breaking test near Finlands russian border‚ the British Army launched its first-ever firing of the high-tech Archer Mobile Howitzer. The test which took place this monday showcased the systems impressive fire-power just 70 miles from Russian territory
The exercise (part of NATOs Dynamic Front 25) brings together about 3‚600 soldiers including 350 british troops and combines forces from 28 nations. This multi-national drill happens at the Rovajarvi range - Europes largest artillery training ground where Colonel Janne Makitalo leads the operations
The new Archer system brings game-changing capabilities to british forces:
* Hits targets up to 30 miles away
* Fires 12 rounds in 3 minutes
* Uses GPS-guided shells
* Needs just 3-4 crew members
The area itself is the reason why allies want to come to the Rovajarvi exercise area to train
The timing is extra-meaningful as Finland joined NATO about a year and half ago - ending its long-standing neutral position that lasted since world war 2. This shift doubled NATOs direct border with Russia which now stretches 832-miles. The UK got 16 Archers to replace older AS-90s that were sent to Ukraine early last year
The exercise shows how NATO adapts to arctic conditions with its cutting-edge equipment - testing both machines and soldiers in the harsh northern environment
