Spencer Matthews completes 30 consecutive marathons on Jordanian desert sand, setting a Guinness World Record. The feat raises over £340,000 for a bereavement charity, inspired by personal loss.

Spencer Matthews, a 36-year-old reality TV personality, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a Guinness World Record for the most consecutive marathons run on sand. The Eton-educated star completed 30 marathons in 30 days, covering a total distance of 1,266 kilometers in the challenging terrain of the Jordanian desert.

The accomplishment, which took place recently, was not just a test of physical endurance but also served a charitable purpose. Matthews raised £340,757 for Global's Make Some Noise, an organization supporting individuals coping with bereavement. This cause holds personal significance for Matthews, who lost his older brother when he was 10 years old.

To achieve this extraordinary goal, Matthews adhered to a strict daily routine. Rising at 2:30 AM, he consumed a protein-rich breakfast before commencing each run at 4:30 AM to avoid the worst of the desert heat. The initial two hours of each marathon were completed in darkness, with Matthews relying on a head torch to navigate the sandy terrain.

The challenging conditions of the Jordanian desert, where temperatures can soar to 40°C (104°F), added an extra layer of difficulty to the already demanding task. Running on sand requires significantly more energy, burning up to 1.6 times more calories than running on firm ground. Moreover, the risk of dehydration in such an environment is high, with the body potentially losing up to 1.5 liters of water per hour.

Matthews' family played a crucial role in supporting his endeavor. His wife, model Vogue Williams, and their three children were present at the finish line to celebrate his achievement. The presence of his loved ones undoubtedly provided emotional support during this grueling challenge.

"The person I was five years ago wouldn't know the person I am now. I don't care if people say I'm addicted to running. I replaced alcohol with the gym and running and suddenly I became a different person. Mum started hugging me in a different way. She was just so happy that I was free of this alcoholic demon that had sat on my back for so long."

This record-breaking feat also served as a platform for Matthews to reflect on his personal growth and past struggles with alcohol addiction. He shared that the demanding regimen and even a close encounter with a venomous snake provided opportunities for introspection. Matthews' journey from battling addiction to becoming an ultra-endurance athlete highlights the potential of exercise as a tool for recovery and mental health improvement.

The Guinness World Records, established in 1955, has recognized Matthews' achievement as a testament to human endurance and determination. This accomplishment not only adds to the growing popularity of ultra-marathons but also demonstrates the power of combining personal challenges with charitable causes.
