A violent incident at East Street Market in south-east London ended with one death and two injuries. Local vendors helped catch the suspect who attacked people randomly at the busy sunday market

At East Street Market in south-east London a knife-wielding man attacked several people on a busy sunday morning causing wide-spread panic among shop-keepers and visitors

The incident started around ten-thirty in the morning when a man in his 60s began attacking market-goers at random. A local fabric seller (who wanted to stay un-named) described how the suspect was “stabbing people willy-nilly“ with a large knife

One victim — a man in his 60s passed away at the scene while emergency workers tried to save his life; two other people got stabbed and were taken to hospital for treatment

I had to run away‚ Iʼve never seen anything like it

said a vegetable stall worker who was nearly attacked

Benaisa Lourdjane a long-time resident helped catch the attacker: “Me and another guy ran after him and held him till police came“ he explained adding that hes been in the area since the early 80s

Commander Peter Stevens said police dont think its terrorism related and believe mental health issues played a role in the attack. Officers quickly caught the suspect (also in his 60s) and arent looking for anyone else

The market area which is just off Walworth Road saw many people running for safety as the attacker moved through the crowds. Emergency services arrived within minutes after getting calls around ten-forty that morning
