A three-week disciplinary hearing has ended with serious consequences for Met Police staff who looked into Sarah Everard case files (around 3.5 yrs ago)
Pc Myles McHugh got fired for checking private info about the victim; while ex-trainee Det Con Hannah Rebbeck wouldʼve faced the same outcome if she hadnt already quit. Sgt Mark Harper got a three-year final warning
The panel found that Rebbeck looked at x-rays and other data because of her morbid-curiosity about the case which happened in early-21. This was when Wayne Couzens — a then-serving officer kidnapped raped and killed the 33-yr old victim
I felt curious‚ anxious and invested in the outcome of the investigation
McHughs actions were labeled as high-harm because he checked medical history relationships and lifestyle info while off-duty. The panel chair Sharmistha Michaels said he tried sharing what he saw with co-workers
- Det Con Tyrone Ward
- Former Insp Akinwale Ajose-Adeogun
- Former Det Sgt Robert Butters
These three officers were cleared as they had work-related reasons to view the files. Another officer is waiting for their misconduct hearing date
Sgt Harper got a lighter punishment because he only looked at basic info about Couzens case progress — not victims personal details. Still the panel said his actions hurt publics trust in police
