Wheelchair racers Hannah Cockroft and Nathan Maguire share their journey from first meeting to competing together in the Paralympics. The couple discusses their athletic careers, relationship, and plans for the future.

Hannah Cockroft and Nathan Maguire, two accomplished Paralympic wheelchair racers, have transformed from fan and idol to a power couple in the world of adaptive sports. Their story is one of resilience, shared passion, and mutual support as they prepare for the upcoming Paris Paralympics and their wedding.

Nathan Maguire's life took an unexpected turn on October 26, 2005, when he experienced a sudden onset of paralysis due to transverse myelitis, a rare condition affecting his spinal cord. Despite this challenge, Nathan quickly adapted and began playing wheelchair basketball just weeks after his discharge from the hospital. His determination led him to set his sights on becoming a Paralympian, a goal he would eventually achieve.

The couple's paths first crossed in 2012, shortly after the London Paralympics where Hannah Cockroft had claimed two gold medals. Nathan, then a young aspiring athlete, obtained Hannah's autograph at a talent event. Little did they know that this brief encounter would be the beginning of a journey that would lead them to compete side by side and plan a life together.

As their relationship developed, Hannah and Nathan found that their shared experiences as Paralympic athletes strengthened their bond. They support each other through rigorous training schedules, often analyzing each other's performances and providing motivation on challenging days. Their home in Chester has been transformed into a high-performance training facility, complete with a gym and a roller room for wheelchair training.

Looking ahead to the Paris Paralympics, both athletes have set ambitious goals. Nathan aims to reach the finals in his events, while Hannah is focused on securing two gold medals. The couple will face the unique challenge of staying in separate accommodations during the Games, adhering to the British team's housing arrangements.

"Watching Nathan race will be terrifying though, I hate it. It's so nerve-wracking as I know how much effort he has put into it and how much it means to him. I'd rather race every day than watch Nathan racing."

Hannah Cockroft on watching Nathan compete

Their wedding is scheduled for three weeks after the Paris Paralympics, serving as a celebratory homecoming in Halifax. While both express a desire to have children in the future, they are currently prioritizing their athletic careers and finding the right timing for this next step in their lives.

The story of Hannah and Nathan exemplifies the power of adaptive sports to transform lives and create unexpected connections. As they continue to inspire others through their achievements on the track, they also demonstrate the strength that comes from a partnership built on shared experiences and mutual support.
