NHS top-brass might lose their jobs if they try to silence workers who point-out problems‚ according to fresh plans released on Nov-24th. Unlike doctors and nurses NHS managers dont need any special permits to work (which lets them move between jobs even after bad behavior)
The plans come after news-reports showed how managers hurt careers of medical staff who spoke up. Some bosses even hired private-detectives and lawyers to dig-up dirt on workers‚ while others made-up evidence to make good workers look bad
- voluntary sign-up system
- complete ban from NHS work
- full legal oversight rules
Karyn Smith‚ Health Minister and ex-NHS manager wrote: “We need to fix places where cover-ups are normal and where protecting image is more important than patients“
Plans to regulate managers are good news but it will only work if there is a proper fact-finding body
Dr Azhar Ansari from Justice for Doctors group thinks its about time: “Managers have been hiding bad things for too long; this is about keeping patients safe“
The story of Dr Day shows why changes are needed — he lost his training spot in 2013 after saying intensive-care unit didnt have enough staff. He had to fight in court for many years but had to take a deal because they said heʼd have to pay huge costs if he lost
Amanda Pritchard‚ who runs NHS England says theyʼre already working on new rules for managers: making a code-of-practice new training process and better standards. The government will look at peoples ideas for 12 weeks starting this Tuesday
