Neo-Nazi Convicted for Planning Terror Attack on Scottish LGBT Group

A white supremacist in Falkirk, Scotland, has been found guilty of plotting a terrorist attack against an LGBT organization. The man possessed an arsenal of weapons and expressed neo-Nazi ideologies online.

In a significant development for Scottish law enforcement, a neo-Nazi individual has been convicted for planning a terrorist attack against an LGBT group in Falkirk. Alan Edward, a 54-year-old resident of the Redding area, was found guilty of multiple charges under the Terrorism Act, marking a crucial victory in the fight against extremism.

In September 2022, armed police conducted a raid on Edward's residence, uncovering an alarming collection of weaponry. The arsenal included a crossbow with telescopic sights, 14 knives (some bearing Nazi insignia), machetes, a samurai sword, and a stun gun. Additionally, authorities discovered an air pistol, an SS-style skull mask, and specialized fighting gloves. Prosecutors described this cache as "an armoury," highlighting the serious nature of Edward's preparations.

The trial, which lasted 11 days, revealed Edward's deep-rooted extremist beliefs. He was found guilty of racism, anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, and statutory breach of the peace. His communications included vile anti-Semitic content and derogatory statements about various groups, including the LGBTQ+ community.

Edward's online presence was substantial, with nearly 28,000 followers on social media platforms. His activities caught the attention of counter-terrorism investigators after he posted a video glorifying National Action, a banned far-right group in the UK since 2016. This group's proscription underscores the UK government's commitment to combating extremist organizations.

Prosecutor Paul Kearney KC described Edward as "a man who with clear neo-Nazi ideals...[was] preparing for an act of terrorism which would include an ideologically driven incident of serious violence." This characterization aligns with the broader context of neo-Nazism, a movement that emerged after World War II and continues to promote Hitler's ideologies.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Scotland, despite significant progress in rights and acceptance since the 1980s. It also underscores the importance of hate speech laws, which in Scotland are part of the Criminal Justice and Licensing Act 2010.

Judge Fiona Tait has deferred sentencing until October 21, 2024, at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court is also considering a Serious Crime Prevention Order, a measure introduced in the UK in 2007 to manage high-risk offenders post-release. This order could impose restrictions on Edward's business dealings, communications, and movements upon his eventual release from prison.

The conviction of Alan Edward serves as a reminder of the persistent threat of far-right extremism and the crucial role of counter-terrorism efforts led by MI5 in collaboration with local police forces. It also highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and community support in combating hate and protecting vulnerable groups.

Prosecutor Paul Kearney KC stated:

As Scotland continues to grapple with issues of extremism and hate, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of unity, tolerance, and the rule of law in maintaining a safe and inclusive society for all its citizens.
