A water buffalo, nicknamed "Hank," is on the loose in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, after escaping during transport. Police warn residents as search efforts continue for the injured animal.

In an unusual turn of events, a water buffalo has been roaming the suburbs of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, causing concern among residents and authorities. The animal, nicknamed "Hank" by locals, was captured on doorbell cameras as it wandered through residential areas.

Police in Pleasant Hill, located approximately six miles east of Des Moines, responded to reports of an "animal in the road" on a recent Saturday. The owner informed authorities that the water buffalo was "aggressive," prompting a cautious approach to the situation.

Efforts to contain the animal proved challenging due to insufficient tranquilizers and equipment for handling such a unique case. The situation escalated when the water buffalo displayed aggressive behavior towards officers, resulting in one officer shooting and injuring the animal. Despite this, the buffalo managed to escape.

Authorities have since employed various methods to locate and capture the injured animal. Search efforts include the use of ATV quad bikes to patrol bicycle trails and areas along Little Four Mile Creek, where the buffalo was last sighted. The Pleasant Hill Police Department has also partnered with the Polk County Sheriff's Office to utilize drone technology and has enlisted the help of local experts in animal containment.

"We remain cautiously optimistic. At this point, I think most of our state is rooting for a happy ending for Hank!"

Iowa Farm Sanctuary statement

The Iowa Farm Sanctuary has expressed interest in rescuing the water buffalo if found alive. According to the animal charity, the buffalo escaped while being transported for meat processing. The organization hopes to provide veterinary care and sanctuary for the animal, though they acknowledge the possibility that the owner may proceed with the original plan.

Water buffaloes, not native to North America, are primarily found in Asia and parts of Europe. These impressive animals can weigh up to 2,650 pounds and stand 5-6 feet tall at the shoulder. Domesticated for over 5,000 years, they are known for their distinctive curved horns and ability to swim across rivers and lakes with ease.

As the search continues, authorities emphasize that community safety remains their top priority. Residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid approaching the wounded animal if spotted. The unusual situation has captured the attention of many, with locals and animal advocates alike hoping for a positive outcome for the escaped water buffalo.
