Carol Vorderman Proposes "National Service" for MPs in New Book

Former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman suggests MPs should experience various jobs to better understand the country. Her new book outlines proposals for political reform and increased engagement.

In her recently published book, "Now What?: On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain," Carol Vorderman has proposed a novel idea for Members of Parliament to gain a better understanding of the country they serve. The former Countdown presenter, known for her mathematical prowess and outspoken views, suggests a form of "national service" for MPs to bridge the gap between politicians and the public.

Vorderman's proposal, inspired by Rishi Sunak's similar suggestion for 18-year-olds during his July 2023 election campaign, aims to address what she perceives as a disconnect between MPs and the realities faced by most Britons. The concept draws parallels to the UK's historical national service, which was abolished in 1960 after being introduced in 1947.

The book, released on September 12, 2024, outlines a plan where MPs would spend three days each month for the first year of every Parliament interning in various roles. These positions could include hospital porter, train trolley attendant, teaching assistant, factory worker, and even collecting bins. Vorderman argues that this experience would provide politicians with a more comprehensive understanding of the country they represent.

"They could undertake their own form of national service in order to understand how our country actually works at all levels, rather than just parachuting straight into the cosy and subsidised world of Westminster."

Carol Vorderman writes in her book:

In addition to the job placements, Vorderman suggests relocating Parliament for three months each year as part of a "true levelling up" initiative. This proposal aims to address criticisms of the UK Parliament being too London-centric and disconnected from other regions. The House of Commons, with its 650 elected members, has faced such critiques in the past.

The book also recommends mandatory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) background checks for political candidates and random drug and alcohol tests within the House of Commons. These measures are intended to enhance transparency and accountability in the political system.

Vorderman's proposals come in the wake of her departure from BBC Radio Wales in November 2023, following the introduction of new social media guidelines. As an outspoken critic of the previous Conservative government, she chose to maintain her voice on social media platforms rather than continue her work with the BBC.

However, not all politicians are in favor of Vorderman's ideas. Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, a former Conservative MP, criticized the proposal as "tokenistic" and argued that constituency surgeries are a more effective means of understanding voters' needs. These regular meetings between MPs and constituents have long been a cornerstone of British parliamentary democracy, which dates back to the 13th century.

As the debate continues, Vorderman's book has reignited discussions about political engagement and representation in the UK. With her background in mathematics, education, and media, she brings a unique perspective to the ongoing conversation about reforming and improving the country's political landscape.
