The 2024 Booker Prize shortlist features a record five women authors, marking a significant shift from last year's male-dominated lineup. Only one male author made the cut in this year's selection.

The 2024 Booker Prize shortlist has been unveiled, showcasing a historic representation of women authors. This year's selection features five women and one man, a stark contrast to the previous year's lineup that included more men named Paul than women.

Percival Everett stands as the sole male contender with his novel "James," a reimagining of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim, the runaway slave. The female nominees include Samantha Harvey for "Orbital," Rachel Kushner for "Creation Lake," Anne Michaels for "Held," Yael van der Wouden for "The Safekeep," and Charlotte Wood for "Stone Yard Devotional."

Sarah Collins, one of the Booker judges, expressed surprise at the gender balance, stating, "We came up with a shortlist, we sat back and looked at the pile, and someone said: 'Huh, there are five women there.'" She emphasized that the books were selected based on merit, describing them as "tremendous."

The Booker Prize, established in 1969, has undergone several changes throughout its 55-year history. Initially known as the Booker-McConnell Prize, it was renamed the Man Booker Prize in 2002 before reverting to the Booker Prize in 2019. The prize is open to works of fiction written in English and published in the UK or Ireland.

In 2014, the eligibility rules were expanded to include authors from across the English-speaking world, including the United States. This change has led to some controversy, with concerns about American dominance in the selections. However, Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation, defended the current rules, stating, "The judges really appreciate being able to scan the whole horizon of what's being written in English."

The shortlist reflects a diverse range of nationalities, with Harvey as the sole British representative. Everett and Kushner are American, Michaels is Canadian, Van der Wouden is Dutch, and Wood is Australian. Notably, Van der Wouden is the first Dutch writer to be shortlisted for the prize.

The winner of the £50,000 prize will be announced on November 12, 2024. The judging panel, chaired by Edmund de Waal, selected the shortlist from 156 entries. De Waal commented on the quality of the nominated works, saying, "They are books that made us want to keep on reading, to ring up our friends and tell them about them."

"It was such a gratifying, surprising, thrilling thing to realise, especially coming off the back of a year with three Pauls. It's time for the Paulettes and Paulinas."

Sarah Collins, Booker Prize judge

This year's shortlist not only marks a significant moment for gender representation in the Booker Prize but also continues the award's tradition of recognizing diverse voices in literature. As the literary world awaits the announcement of the winner, the 2024 shortlist serves as a testament to the evolving landscape of contemporary fiction.
