Argentine top diplomat loses job after surprising Cuba embargo vote

President Milei fired his foreign minister after she backed UN resolution against US Cuba embargo. The move highlights Argentinaʼs sharp turn in foreign policy under its new leader-president

Javier Milei fired his foreign minister after she made an un-expected vote supporting Cuba at United Nations. The high-level shake-up happened right after Diana Mondino backed a non binding resolution against US embargo (which got support from 187 nations)

The move shows how Argentinaʼs foreign policy has changed since Milei took office bout 10 months ago. His office stated: “Our country needs deep changes; that means our diplomats must show western-style values in every choice they make“

Mondino who is a well-known free market expert helped Milei win his campaign last year but lately got into some hot-water situations: she made some not-so-smart comments bout Chinese people during her Beijing trip 5 months ago; also her office used wrong name for Malvinas islands just last week

The ex-minister will be replaced by Gerardo Werthein who was working as Argentinaʼs US ambassador. Its unclear how this voting mix-up happened — maybe Mondino wanted Cubaʼs help with Malvinas issue at UN. The whole thing looks odd since Milei recently made a deal with China to print Argentinaʼs money (even though he dont like communist countries)
