Great British Energy, backed by £8.3 billion in public funds, aims to invest in green energy projects nationwide and support industries such as offshore wind. The company will not directly supply power to homes but instead focus on developing clean energy infrastructure. Any profits generated will be returned to the public purse.
The selection of Aberdeen, often referred to as the "Granite City" due to its distinctive architecture, as the base for GB Energy is significant. With a population of approximately 200,000, Aberdeen has been a hub for the North Sea oil and gas industry since the 1970s. The city has been actively working to diversify its economy and establish itself as a center for renewable energy in recent years.
Juergen Maier, the chairman of Great British Energy, stated that the company's presence in Aberdeen would serve as a starting point for its operations across Scotland and the UK. GB Energy has also formed a partnership with the Crown Estate, an institution dating back to 1066, which oversees £16 billion worth of land and seabed belonging to the monarch. "Keir Starmer's announcement will do almost nothing to compensate for the hammer-blow Labour's policies on oil and gas have already delivered to the North East."
The Conservative Party has criticized the move as a "gimmick" aimed at distracting from Labour's previous announcement to halt new North Sea oil and gas exploration licenses. They argue that the policy could pose a threat to Scottish jobs, the economy, and energy security.
