New assisted dying law details: Three-week process to end life revealed
A fresh bill outlines three-week timeline for terminally-ill patients seeking assisted dying in UK. Two doctors and judge approval needed‚ with strict self-administration rules making it different from other countries
A ground-breaking assisted dying proposal puts forward strict rules for life-ending choices. Kim Leadbeater introduces legislation that needs two doctors ok and judge review - making it a three week process
The bill sets up clear steps: first two doctors check if person fits rules (they must wait 7 days between checks); then a judge looks at proof and waits 14 more days before final decision. Its different from places like Canada cause people must take medicine themselves
This Bill not only offers protections to people nearing the end of their lives that it dont have at present‚ but also provides for the strictest safeguards anywhere in the world
Some Labour big-names arent sure about it though. Wes Streeting and Lord Blunkett showed doubts about safety rules. The bill says person must:
- Be over 18
- Have same doctor for 1 year
- Be terminal with 6 months left
- Show clear mind
- Take medicine without help
Rules are super-strict: doctors must check no-one pushed person into it and tell them about other choices like hospice care. Chief medical person will watch how it works‚ and health-chief needs to check good care is available everywhere
Right-to-Life UK thinks its risky while medical group “Our Duty of Care“ sent note to PM saying its impossible to stop future changes. Last time (back in 2015) MPs said no to similar idea - but now theres new vote coming up end of month
