Man wins rare court case to use late wife's embryo - but thats just the start

EF‚ a 45-year old investment banker got permission from court to use an embryo he created with his late wife almost 7 years ago. The court-case took more than 3 years to complete but this is just a first step in his unique journey

Their story started about 20 years ago when EF met his wife AB - a super-smart 23-year old who caught his attention in newspaper before they even met. After quick wedding they had their first daughter in 2010: she was born very early and tiny but grew up to be gifted (her vocabulary included words like ʼjudiciousʼ by age 3)

The couple wanted more kids and went through IVF around 2017; they got two good embryos. Their second daughter was born in 01/2018 but tragedy struck later that year - both mother and baby died in an event that EF cant discuss due to legal reasons

said EF about dealing with loss

When clinic called about unused embryo in mid-2019 EF decided to try and continue his wifes legacy. He believes embryo has soul from conception and wants to give it chance at life - even though finding surrogate in UK will be hard since commercial surrogacy isnt allowed

His teenage daughter supports the idea of having sibling; however his mom questions if its just grief driving his choices. EF stays fit (runs monthly marathons) and has good support system but knows challenges ahead: “Youʼre only responsible for your actions - not the outcome‚“ he says
