Hidden drawer baby case: Mother gets prison time for shocking child neglect

In a shocking case from Cheshire a mother got seven-and-a-half years behind bars for keeping her baby girl hidden in a drawer until she was almost three. The child (who had never seen daylight) was found by her mothers new boy-friend when he came back to use the bath-room

The child was kept in a divan-bed drawer: never going outside never meeting other people and being fed Weetabix through a syringe. The toddler didnt even know her own name and had serious health issues including a non-treated cleft palate

I was shocked the mother did not show any emotion and appeared blasé about the situation

Social worker who discovered the child

Judge Steven Everett said at Chester Crown Court on 11/26/24 that the case “defies belief“. The child who is now in foster-care; had multiple problems: matted hair deformities and rashes. Her growth was equal to a 0-10 month old baby when found

The mother (whose name is hidden to protect the kids) told cops she hid the pregnancy because she was scared of the dad. While her other children were well-looked after this baby was left alone when she:

  • Took other kids to school
  • Went to work
  • Visited relatives during xmas
  • Spent time with her new partner

The tiny girl is now slowly recovering from what Judge Everett called “almost a living death“ and shows signs of being quite smart despite her rough start in life
