British Museum party shock: Top editor confronts Church leader after scandal

At a high-profile British Museum trusteeʼs dinner last week Ian Hislop couldnt believe his eyes when he saw Justin Welby mingling with guests (just one day after stepping down as Archbishop of Canterbury)

The timing was extra-weird because Welby had quit due to a big church abuse case: he didnt report John Smyth to police back in 2013‚ which might have stopped more people getting hurt. On that Tuesday he wrote about leaving “in sorrow“ with abuse survivors

Isnt this lovely?

Archbishop Welby to guests at the museum

Hislop‚ who leads Have I Got News For You said he just had to speak up when the Archbishop tried making small-talk. “It is lovely that you have resigned“ the editor told him straight-up; making the church leader look super-surprised

The Archbishopʼs remaining schedule looks pretty empty until Jan 6th when he leaves for good. His usual jobs will go to Stephen Cottrell from York‚ and he wont do his normal new-years TV message which heʼs done since 14. The church hasnt said if heʼll do the x-mas sermon yet - but its looking doubtful
