Baltic Sea mystery: Underwater cables cut raises questions about sea security
Two important under-sea communication lines in Baltic Sea stopped working within days. German and Swedish officials started looking into possible non-accidental damage to cables between several countries
Recent under-sea cable problems in Baltic Sea got officials worried about non-random damage (its not looking like an accident). The first cable connecting Helsinki-Rostock stopped working and then another one linking Sweden-Lithuania went down
Nobody believes that these cables were accidentally severed
The damage looks pretty bad — both cables got fully cut which made tech companies scratch their heads. Carl-Oskar Bohlin from Swedish defence told that theyʼre checking whats going on; while repair folks say it might take 5-15 days to fix everything up
Infrastructure protection became a hot topic especially with all the stuff happening around Baltic Sea lately. Ruben Brekelmans (Dutch defence guy) pointed out that theres more Russian ships doing weird things near vital sea equipment these days. The companies that own these cables — Cinia and Arelion cant really say what happened until they get down there and look at the damage
German officials started a proper check-up of the situation: they think its some kind of planned action — not just random damage. Theyʼre now talking about watching their sea stuff more carefully (which makes sense with all this Baltic drama going on)
