Ukraine is grappling with the loss of Lt Col Oleksiy Mes, a 30-year-old fighter pilot who played a crucial role in the country's efforts to acquire F-16 fighter jets. Mes, known by the callsign "Moonfish", was one of the first Ukrainian airmen qualified to fly the advanced Western aircraft.
The incident occurred during a Russian missile and drone attack, when Mes's F-16 was reportedly struck by a US-made Patriot anti-aircraft system. This friendly fire tragedy has sparked controversy and led to the dismissal of Ukraine's air force chief by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Mes's importance to Ukraine's air force modernization cannot be overstated. In 2022, he traveled to the United States with fellow pilot Andrii Pilshchykov to advocate for F-16 donations. Their efforts included meetings with lawmakers and a television appearance alongside actor Sean Penn.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon, a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft, has been used by 25 nations since its introduction in 1978. For Ukraine, acquiring these jets represented a significant leap in military capability. The transition from Soviet-era aircraft to Western models requires extensive retraining, which Mes likened to "going from using a Nokia straight to an iPhone without all those steps in between."
Mes's funeral in his hometown of Shepetivka, a city of 42,000 in western Ukraine, drew hundreds of mourners. A pair of MiG-29 fighter jets, flown by his former comrades, performed a low-level flypast in tribute. The MiG-29, a Soviet-designed fighter introduced in 1982, stands in stark contrast to the F-16, highlighting the technological transition Ukraine's air force is undergoing.
The loss of both Mes and the F-16, valued between $20 million and $70 million, is a significant setback for Ukraine. As of August 2024, the country had received only six F-16s and had just six pilots trained to fly them, far short of the 40 pilots and 20 planes needed for a full operational squadron.
"He was one of those who promoted the idea of the importance of providing Ukraine with modern aircraft. This is a truly heavy loss for the entire Ukraine and the Air Force in particular."
Despite this tragedy, Ukraine's efforts to modernize its air force continue. President Zelensky recently announced that a total of 80 F-16s would be delivered over the next few years, with more pilots undergoing training. This international coalition for F-16 pilot training, involving 11 countries, exemplifies the complex nature of modern warfare and international military cooperation.
