Tree Surgeon's Murder-Suicide Linked to Tax Bill Stress

A tragic murder-suicide in Tunbridge Wells involved a tree surgeon and his wife, reportedly triggered by financial stress from a large tax bill. The incident occurred weeks before their planned retirement to Thailand.

In a tragic incident that shook the community of Tunbridge Wells, a tree surgeon and his wife were found dead in their home on February 23, 2024. Richard Parks, 63, and his wife Suratchanee "Lat" Parks, 53, were discovered by authorities after family members raised concerns about their welfare.

The couple, who had been planning to retire to Thailand in 2025, faced unexpected financial difficulties due to a substantial tax bill from HMRC. This financial setback reportedly caused significant stress for Richard Parks, who owned multiple businesses, including a tree surgery company.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jessica Summers reported that the couple's marriage had previously been described as "happy and without problems." However, the recent financial strain had taken its toll on their relationship and mental well-being.

The police investigation revealed a gruesome scene at the Parks' residence. Blood stains were found throughout the house, indicating a violent altercation. A blood spatter analyst concluded that a bloody assault had occurred in the kitchen area, with evidence suggesting attempts to clean up afterwards.

Suratchanee Parks, who worked at a nail bar and Thai massage parlour, was found in the bathroom with multiple injuries, including a fractured skull. The pathologist noted that some wounds were inflicted after her death or as she was dying. Richard Parks's body was discovered in the hallway.

"This is a terribly sad situation. Only those two will ever know exactly what happened. They loved each other very much and he was looking forward to going to Thailand. It's just terribly sad for both families."

Robert Parks, Richard's brother, stated:

The inquest revealed that Richard Parks had taken steps to set his affairs in order just days before the incident. He had made changes to his will and handed important documents to his sister, actions that retrospectively appear ominous.

At separate inquests in Maidstone, coroner Roger Hatch concluded that Suratchanee Parks was unlawfully killed, while Richard Parks had taken his own life. This tragic case highlights the potential devastating impact of financial stress on mental health and relationships.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support and financial counseling, especially for those facing significant life changes such as retirement. It also underscores the complex nature of domestic violence cases and the need for early intervention and support systems.

As the community of Tunbridge Wells grapples with this tragedy, questions remain about how such incidents can be prevented in the future. The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by small business owners dealing with unexpected tax liabilities and the potential consequences of financial stress on personal relationships.
