In an extraordinary tale of innovation and compassion, a 27-year-old Bactrian camel named Timujin has been given a new lease on life thanks to a pair of custom-made shoes. This remarkable solution has allowed the elderly mammal to regain mobility after suffering from debilitating leg issues.

Timujin, owned by Lady Chichester, resides at the Grade I-listed Little Durnford Manor estate. The camel had been experiencing severe pain due to stretched tendons and swollen joints in his front legs, leaving him unable to walk. Veterinarians initially recommended euthanasia due to the intensity of his discomfort.

In a stroke of ingenuity, Lady Chichester commissioned Stuart Moss, proprietor of Mossy's Shoe Repairs in Salisbury, to create specialized footwear for Timujin. The project, which began in April 2024, presented a unique challenge for the cobbler.

Stuart Moss initially thought the request was a prank, stating, "I never thought I would be making a pair of shoes for an animal, let alone a camel." However, he soon realized the gravity of the situation and embarked on the unconventional task.

The process of creating Timujin's shoes was meticulous and time-consuming. Moss and his colleague Michelle Bradford used kinetic sand to take imprints of the camel's front feet, which they then filled with plaster to create molds. The final product, completed after four months and six fittings, consisted of leather, memory foam, and a rubber sole.

Bactrian camels, native to the steppes of Central Asia, are known for their remarkable adaptability. They can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -40°F to 122°F (-40°C to 50°C) and can survive for weeks without food and water. In the wild, these resilient creatures are critically endangered, making Timujin's case even more significant.

The custom shoes have dramatically improved Timujin's quality of life. Moss reported, "Since he had the shoes fitted, the swelling went down. He now goes for walks every day and is bouncing around like there's no tomorrow." This transformation is particularly noteworthy given that Timujin, at 27 years old, is considered elderly for a camel, although Bactrian camels can live up to 50 years in captivity.

Bradford, who accompanied Timujin on one of his first walks with the new footwear, observed, "He is the gentlest camel and seems to know we are helping him." This heartwarming outcome showcases the positive impact of innovative solutions in animal care.

Timujin's story highlights the unique characteristics of camels, such as their oval-shaped blood cells and ability to close their nostrils to protect against sand. These adaptations, along with their three sets of eyelids and two rows of eyelashes, make them well-suited for harsh desert environments.

As Timujin continues to thrive with his new shoes, his case serves as a testament to the power of creative problem-solving in veterinary care and the importance of compassion for aging animals.

"Before he never wanted to walk, but now he gets up, waits for his shoes and is off! As he is 27, which is quite old for a camel, the shoes have given him a new lease of life."
