Harris Faces Poll Setback as Crucial Debate with Trump Looms

Recent survey shows Trump leading Harris by narrow margin, ending her initial popularity surge. Both candidates prepare for pivotal debate, with Republicans advising Trump to focus on policy over personal attacks.

A recent New York Times survey has revealed a shift in voter preferences, with Donald Trump edging out Kamala Harris by a slim margin of 48% to 47% among likely voters nationally. This development marks the first significant poll indicating a decline in Harris's support since she became the presidential candidate.

The timing of this poll is particularly noteworthy, coming just before a critical televised debate scheduled for Tuesday night. This event is poised to be a pivotal moment in the race, potentially shaping voter perceptions and influencing the trajectory of the campaign.

The survey results suggest that Harris's initial surge in popularity may be waning. James Johnson, co-founder of polling firm JL Partners, commented on the situation:

"The honeymoon is over for Harris. Harris peaked a week before the DNC. There was a sense of relief when she took over from Biden and she managed to energise people who weren't impressed by him, but since RFK dropped out of the race, shoring up voters for Trump and his position, [Ms Harris flagging in the polls] is a trend that's been happening."

This shift in polling data has reduced Harris's lead in the overall average of polls to 2.5%, and to a mere 0.3% in the key swing state of Pennsylvania. It's worth noting that Pennsylvania has historically played a crucial role in determining the outcome of U.S. presidential elections.

As the debate approaches, both candidates are intensifying their preparations. Harris is reportedly engaged in rigorous practice sessions, complete with a mock-up stage and an advisor portraying Trump. In contrast, Trump's approach appears more improvised, focusing on policy refreshers without a stand-in opponent.

Republican leaders are advising Trump to maintain a disciplined focus on policy during the debate. Senator Lindsey Graham emphasized the importance of avoiding personal attacks, suggesting that such exchanges would ultimately benefit Harris.

The upcoming debate will be a test of experience and strategy. Trump, having participated in seven presidential debates, brings a wealth of experience to the stage. Harris, on the other hand, has only one presidential debate under her belt, during which she notably challenged Joe Biden on racial issues.

As the election draws nearer, the importance of these debates cannot be overstated. They provide a platform for candidates to articulate their visions and policies directly to the American people. The outcome of Tuesday's debate could significantly influence voter perceptions and potentially reshape the dynamics of this closely watched presidential race.
