"In my area, there were two to three estates in conflict and mine was bang in the middle. I was 10 years old the first time I had a knife in my face. From a young age, I knew how cheap life was."
Fields' appointment comes 14 years after his historic North Pole expedition, following in the footsteps of Matthew Henson, who reached the pole in 1909 as part of Robert Peary's expedition.
