Two men found guilty of deliberate hit-and-run attacks in Bristol, including one on an NHS worker. Video evidence and DNA traces led to convictions for racially motivated assaults causing serious injuries.

In a disturbing case that has shocked Bristol, Patrick James, 22, and Phillip Adams, 26, have been convicted of orchestrating two separate hit-and-run attacks, one targeting a cyclist and another an NHS worker. The incidents, which occurred in July 2020, have highlighted the growing concern over racially motivated crimes and attacks on healthcare workers.

The Bristol Crown Court delivered its verdict on September 29, 2024, finding both men guilty of conspiracy to cause intentional grievous bodily harm (GBH) to Katungua Tjitendero, an NHS employee. James was additionally convicted for the assault on cyclist Julian Ford, which took place 10 days prior.

The attacks were particularly heinous due to their premeditated nature and the fact that the perpetrators filmed themselves during the acts. Detective Superintendent Mike Buck of Avon and Somerset Police described the incidents as "absolutely sickening," emphasizing the disturbing trend of criminals recording their offenses.

The investigation revealed a pattern of behavior that began on July 16, 2020, when James purchased a blue Honda Accord for £300. This vehicle was later used in both attacks. CCTV footage from local petrol stations played a crucial role in tracking the car's movements, demonstrating the importance of surveillance technology in modern criminal investigations.

The first attack occurred on July 12, 2020, targeting cyclist Julian Ford. The assault left Mr. Ford with smashed ribs and internal bleeding. Ten days later, on July 22, Mr. Tjitendero was walking to Southmead Hospital when he was struck by the same vehicle. He suffered a broken nose, fractured leg, and multiple cuts.

DNA evidence found inside the car linked Adams to the crimes, showcasing the power of forensic science in solving complex cases. This technology, first used in the 1980s, has become a cornerstone of criminal investigations worldwide.

The racial element of these attacks is particularly concerning, reflecting a troubling trend of increased hate crimes in recent years. Bristol, known for its diverse population, has unfortunately seen its share of racial tensions. The UK's strict laws against hate crimes underscore the seriousness with which such offenses are treated.

The case also highlights the vulnerability of NHS workers, who have faced increased risks, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Southmead Hospital, one of the largest in Southwest England, is a vital part of the UK's comprehensive National Health Service, which provides healthcare to all residents.

While James appeared in court, Adams failed to attend, resulting in a warrant for his arrest. This absence from court proceedings can lead to additional charges, complicating the legal process further.

The convictions serve as a reminder of the importance of the UK's justice system, including jury trials for serious criminal cases. As the community grapples with the aftermath of these attacks, attention turns to rehabilitation programs and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

[[Detective Superintendent Mike Buck stated]]

"It was only later in the investigation that we identified the attack on Julian Ford, 10 days beforehand, and realised the significance. This wasn't an isolated incident. These were two linked attacks."

As Bristol recovers from these shocking events, the case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating hate crimes and protecting vulnerable members of society. The convictions of James and Adams mark a significant step towards justice, but also highlight the need for continued vigilance and community action to prevent such senseless acts of violence.
