A 31-year-old man faces murder charges following the death of a renowned chef at Notting Hill Carnival. Police seek witnesses as investigation continues into the tragic incident that occurred during the popular street festival.

In a tragic turn of events at the Notting Hill Carnival, Omar Wilson, 31, has been charged with the murder of Mussie Imnetu, a 41-year-old chef. The incident, which occurred on August 26, 2024, has cast a shadow over one of the world's largest street festivals, known for attracting over a million visitors annually.

Mussie Imnetu, a Sweden-born culinary professional residing in Dubai, was found unconscious with a head injury on Queensway, west London. He succumbed to his injuries four days later, on August 30, 2024. The victim's background as a well-traveled chef, having worked under culinary luminaries such as Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse, and Marcus Wareing, adds a poignant note to the tragedy.

The Metropolitan Police, the UK's largest police force, has pieced together Imnetu's final hours. He was last seen leaving The Arts Club in Mayfair, a prestigious establishment founded in 1863 by Charles Dickens and others, shortly after 1 PM on the day of the incident. He later arrived alone at Dr Power restaurant in Queensway around 10:30 PM, amidst the carnival festivities.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, leading the murder investigation, has appealed for public assistance. The police have released images of 16 individuals who may have crucial information about the attack. DCI Howie emphasized, "We are still very keen to hear from anyone who can help piece together Mussie's movements between 13:00hrs when we know he left The Arts Club in Dover Street, W1, and when he arrived at Dr Power restaurant, in Queensway at 22:30hrs."

The case has progressed rapidly, with Wilson initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Following Imnetu's death, the charge was upgraded to murder. Wilson is scheduled to appear at Southwark Crown Court, a facility opened in 1983 to alleviate case backlogs, for a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 27, 2024.

This incident was not the only tragedy to mar the carnival. In an unrelated event, Cher Maximen, 32, lost her life after being stabbed while attempting to intervene in a fight. The organizers of Notting Hill Carnival expressed their shock at these events, stating:

"We stand together against all violence and condemn these acts, which are against all carnival values."

Carnival Organizers' Statement

The Notting Hill Carnival, which originated in 1966 as a response to racial tensions, has faced criticism and calls for relocation due to safety concerns in recent years. These tragic events have reignited discussions about the festival's future and the need for enhanced security measures.

As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that those pictured in the released images are not suspects but potential witnesses who may hold crucial information for solving this case.
