A 38-year-old amputee was fatally stabbed in Clapton, East London. Two suspects have been arrested as police appeal for witnesses in the ongoing investigation.

In a tragic incident in East London, Jade Anthony Barnett, a 38-year-old amputee, lost his life in a stabbing attack. The event unfolded on Rushmore Road in Clapton on August 28, 2024, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to witnesses, Barnett, who used an electric wheelchair due to a leg amputation, was unable to escape his assailants. The attack occurred near a set of stairs on Overbury Street, following what witnesses described as a gathering that "escalated."

The Metropolitan Police responded to the scene at 3:38 PM after receiving reports of the stabbing. Despite the efforts of London Ambulance Service paramedics, Barnett was pronounced dead at the location. Law enforcement officials have since apprehended two men, aged 28 and 21, on suspicion of murder.

Friends of Barnett revealed that he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 2007. In the years following, he demonstrated remarkable resilience and community spirit. Roosevelt Morrison, 44, recounted coaching Barnett at Pedro Amateur Boxing Club in 2023 as part of his rehabilitation following a stroke. Amateur boxing clubs often play a crucial role in community engagement and fitness programs.

Barnett's charitable nature was evident in his plans to donate his old prosthetic legs in Senegal, a West African country known for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty. This gesture highlights the long history of prosthetic limbs, which dates back to ancient civilizations, and their importance in improving quality of life for amputees.

Tasha Jay, 45, a long-time acquaintance of Barnett, spoke of his positive character and mentioned that he leaves behind a daughter in her early teens. Barnett's sister, Simone Barnett, 45, described him as "jolly, cheerful, caring" and someone who "laughed everything off."

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, overseeing policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, stated that the investigation is in its early stages. He urged anyone with information to come forward, either directly to the police or anonymously through Crimestoppers, an independent charity that allows people to report crime information without revealing their identity.

The incident has led to increased police presence in Clapton, reflecting community policing strategies that often involve enhanced visibility and engagement with local residents. This tragic event occurs against the backdrop of rising concerns about knife crime in urban areas across the UK in recent years.

As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in understanding the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss of life.

"Our investigation is still in the early stages and my detectives are working hard to establish the circumstances of what has happened this afternoon. If anyone has any information about this tragic incident I urge them to come forward and speak to us, or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously with any information."
