Naomi Campbell Faces 5-Year Charity Trustee Ban Amid Mismanagement Probe

Naomi Campbell, the renowned British supermodel, has been prohibited from serving as a charity trustee for five years following an investigation into financial mismanagement at Fashion for Relief, the organization she established in 2005. The Charity Commission, a regulatory body, uncovered serious issues in the charity's operations, leading to Campbell's disqualification along with two other trustees.

Fashion for Relief, which aimed to combine the worlds of fashion and philanthropy, has come under scrutiny for its allocation of funds. Despite claiming to have raised over $15 million for various global causes, the inquiry revealed that only 8.5% of the charity's total expenditure between April 2016 and July 2022 was directed towards charitable grants.

The investigation exposed unauthorized expenses, including luxury hotel stays, spa treatments, and personal items charged to the charity. For instance, €9,400 was spent on a three-night stay at a five-star hotel for Campbell, with an additional €7,940 allocated for spa services, room service, and other personal expenses.

Bianka Hellmich and Veronica Chou, the other trustees implicated in the mismanagement, received disqualifications of nine and four years, respectively. The commission also discovered unauthorized payments to Hellmich amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Fashion for Relief's fundraising efforts primarily consisted of high-profile fashion shows and galas featuring celebrity auctions. These events attracted notable figures such as Pierce Brosnan, Justin Bieber, and Uma Thurman. Models like Kate Moss and Beyoncé have graced the charity's runway, alongside appearances by British royalty.

The Charity Commission's investigation, which began in 2021, resulted in the recovery of £344,000 and the protection of an additional £98,000 in charitable funds. Earlier this year, Fashion for Relief was dissolved and removed from the UK's charity register.
